Our story
Vinal St Joinery is a custom furniture studio based in Rockport, Maine. Owned and operated by Evan Waters, we specialize in chairs, stools and side tables — everyday pieces designed to live comfortably and usefully in your home.
Evan has been working with wood for more than 20 years. He fell in love with working with hand tools after taking a course in Cambridge, Massachusetts and built his workbench and a set of hand planes shortly after. Later living in a tiny studio apartment in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, he built his first side table at that workbench, which also doubled as his kitchen countertop, desk and dining room table.
The workbench has followed him and his family to San Francisco, Denver and now back home to Maine, producing new pieces of furniture at every stop. Today, Evan works from his studio on Vinal Street in Rockport, crafting a line of classic pieces and taking on commissioned work.
Our process
We believe furniture should be built to last, made from solid, natural materials using classic joinery techniques. Our designs are simple and elegant, blending traditional profiles with modern touches. These pieces are designed to fit your life today and earn a place in your home, following you wherever you go.
We begin with a selection of domestic hardwoods, milling and preparing each board in our shop. From there, components are shaped and refined trough a combination of machine and hand tools, creating surfaces and details that give each piece its own character.
